EU SETTLEMENT SCHEME - IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR EU CITIZENS LIVING IN THE UK

The UK left the EU on 31 January 2020. The Brexit Transition Period ended on 31 December 2020. If you’re an EU, European Economic Area (EEA) or Swiss citizen, you and your family can apply to the EU Settlement Scheme to continue living in the UK after 30 June 2021. You can also apply if you’re the family member of an eligible person of Northern Ireland.

If your application is successful, you’ll get either settled or pre-settled status. Which status you get may depend on when you apply.

Applications are free and the scheme is open until 30 June 2021. Settled status for EU citizens will guarantee access to:

  • The right to remain in the UK
  • Public services, such as healthcare and education
  • Public funds and pensions
  • British citizenship (which can be applied for at a later date)

There are as many as 94,000 EU nationals living in Birmingham, plus their family members, who may be eligible. So far an estimated 90% have applied. That means there are still thousands of people in the city who need to make an application before 30 June 2021.

We’re particularly encouraging promotion and support of the EUSS across local services and community networks, particularly in the Erdington, Ladywood, Perry Barr, Hall Green and Yardley Constituencies. We’re also keen to promote engagement with the EUSS by the city’s Polish and Roma communities.
